Dr James Hoskinson BSc (Hons) MSc DClinPsych

CONSULTANT CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST

My name is James Hoskinson. I am a HCPC registered Consultant Clinical Psychologist, having qualified in 2011.

I graduated with a first class (Hons) Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology at the University of Bangor, North Wales, before moving on to do a Masters in Forensic Psychology in Glasgow. I subsequently completed my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Leeds.

I am a dedicated, committed, and passionate psychologist. Throughout my personal life, I adopt a kind and caring attitude, showing sensitivity, empathy, and respect with clients and colleagues alike. I value my sense of integrity and my sense of humour, which I believe shows throughout my personal and professional life. My life experiences and personal attributes ultimately enable me to develop trusting therapeutic relationships, which allows clients to feel safe and looked after during their therapeutic journey.

My qualified experience has seen me working with children, young people and their families in the NHS and voluntary sectors. I have developed expertise in supporting the emotional and psychological well-being of adults, young people, and children through work in a range of settings including inpatient and outpatient mental health services, child development teams, and therapeutic social work settings.

My areas of specialist clinical interest include:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approaches for the treatment of generalised anxiety and, or mood difficulties, as well as obsessive and compulsive disorders (OCD)

  • Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP) informed principles to help with attachment problems based in developmental trauma, general interpersonal relationship difficulties, self-esteem issues, and problems surrounding bereavement and loss

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) informed principles to support clients with issues around distress tolerance, regulating emotions, and interpersonal effectiveness

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) for the treatment of clients suffering with a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other debilitating trauma-related symptoms

  • Systemic Family Work to help with the management of conflict and disharmony in families/couples

  • Neurodevelopmental Queries: In addition to the above, I also have extensive experience of assessing and working with people with neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). I am thereby trained in specialist areas of neurodevelopmental assessment, including the Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI-R) and the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2). Whilst I would not provide full neurodevelopmental assessments, I am well placed to offer neurodevelopmental screening assessments. Such a process will enable parents to experience speedy, cost effective and reliable guidance as to whether you would require referral for a full neurodevelopmental assessment or if a differential diagnosis can be discerned without advancing to further significant and unnecessary cost

  • Supervision: Individual clinical supervision for practitioners working in areas of mental health; reflective practice group supervision for support workers, inpatient teams, and community teams

  • Consultation: Professional discussions with regard to specific referral queries can be
arranged with a wide network of statutory systems, such as police, youth offending teams,
    schools, and social care
